We Still Have a Saying Over What They Wear

As I sit by my Atelier, glancing at a pile of Dog Fashion Magazines, I cannot help but reflect... What a revolution it has been! Yes, Canine Fashion has come a long way, but one thing has remained truthful.

Dogs are living lifestyle statements!

Unlike our human kids, we still have a saying over what they wear! Add massive doses of unconditional love to this picture and what you get is Stylish Love on the go that instantly markets itself. Powerful isn't it? Even the Egyptians knew it!

Not too long ago, dog fashion was more of a Crafty Art, something usually done by women in their spare time with whatever materials were available. It was improvisation at its best.

We all remember dog sweaters with big turtlenecks walking around carrying little Chihuahuas! Ahhhh, we have seen it! Somehow, in time… a new outlook was born and dog fashion became Canine Couture. Should we blame it on Hollywood? Perhaps… and we are all guilty of contribution.

The desire to socialize our dogs and facilitate their acceptance in society has generated what is now today’s biggest trend. Our dogs reflect our personal fashion sense; they are expressions of our style. Having said that I will share my observations:

Today’s hot dogs wear:

  • Bold Colors not afraid of attention! Colors are loud this summer. Look for citrusy limes, oranges, cantaloupes and turquoises pairing up with hot pinks, reds and fuchsias. Save your neutrals for the winter time. Then, they will be grand.

  • T extured Surfaces – Ultra Suede, Faux Skins, Canvases, Neoprene, Denim, Organic Cotton, Appliqués of all kinds.

  • Timeless Patterns and Symbols- Fleur de Lis, Crests, Crowns, Symbols of all kinds as well as generation statements such as the hippy wheel.

  • Hardware – Obvious and not hidden! Bright Silver is back, so are chains and medals. Function ality is in!

  • Tailored Fit – a tailored cut has substituted the bulk easygoing tees and hoodies. Look for vest harnesses, dresses that contour the dog’s natural shape. Which brings me to say… fit dogs are in!

  • Big Dogs in clothing is probably the hottest trend now. Okay big guys, you have won the right to dress up and show off!

  • As for jewelry,… pearls are out, crystals are in! Spiky collars are also exiting the scene. Big, thick and luxurious necklaces and jewelry-encrusted collars embellish necks of all sizes. Think wide! And for those of you who can’t resist a charm for the daily collar, think unique items, outside the pet aisle to substitute tradi tional bones and paws.

Moving out of the dog fashion scene:

  • The baby look! Our dogs have grown up, substitute the old-fashioned baby pink for a hot fuchsia and a for that baby blue, how about a vivid turquoise instead?

  • Dog Shoes are out! Nail color instead… Opi for dogs, anyone?

  • Dog Costumes… Unless is Halloween… keep your tutus and costumes in the closet . Elegant wear is hot.
  • Turtle necks and long sleeve outfits… the weather dictates: bare necks and dog cologne!

I wonder how my dog evaluates my sense of style… hmmmm

That is a whole new article!
